What Materials Will a Skip Hire Company Accept?

Skip Hire

Whilst there are many reasons why you might hire a skip to dispose of domestic, commercial or industrial waste, the biggest benefit has to be the convenience of the service. When you have items of all different shapes and sizes, sorting through and disposing of each one correctly is a complicated task- not to mention time-consuming! From packing it up into your car to unloading it all at the relevant rubbish depots, clearing up a large property or busy building site is no easy feat.

However, when you work with a skip hire company, your job will more than likely be cut in half. Not only is the receptacle delivered more or less to your doorstep, but once you’ve filled it to your heart’s content, you won’t have to lift another finger! A reputable skip hiring business will arrive at your property promptly to remove the container and further to this, they will sort through and dispose of all your waste on your behalf.

It’s not difficult to see why many people opt for skips as a means of disposing of large amounts of rubbish with ease. That being said, it’s important to note that when it comes to what can be put in a skip, there are a few restrictions. It’s true that many items can be tossed into your skip bin without a second thought, however, certain materials are not accepted by many companies- but what do these include?

If you’re considering hiring a skip for the first time, being clued up on what is and isn’t accepted is the key to discovering whether or not this method of waste disposal is suitable for your project. Whether you’re decluttering your home or clearing up a busy construction site, there are certain items that aren’t skip-appropriate. So, to prepare you for your upcoming job, we’ve listed just some of the items that many waste disposal companies will and won’t take along with the many benefits of hiring a skip for your waste disposal needs.

Waste disposal via skip: what can I throw away?

If you’re looking to give your home a much-needed revamp, clearing out any unwanted junk is likely to be the first thing on your agenda. A person’s home can contain all manner of different materials and a skip is undoubtedly the most efficient way to dispose of these items in one fell swoop. So what materials will a skip hire company accept?

Paper and cardboard

If you’re a hoarder by nature, you may find that your loft is piled high with papers that haven’t been touched in years. From old newspapers to essays and project work from your school years, there are many things we save simply because of the sentimental value they have. However, if you’re keen to do a clear out, both paper and cardboard products will undoubtedly be accepted by your skip hire company.

Metal

Whether you’ve got metal items at home or you generate lots of scrap metal on your job site, it’s handy to know that this can be tossed into a skip if needs be. However, be sure to handle any potentially dangerous pieces of metal carefully and load them into the skip slowly to ensure you don’t incur any injuries.

Glass

As with metal, glass can be dangerous if not handled correctly. From chipped glass bottles to cracked window panes, glass has the potential to cause injury, so be particularly mindful of this when offloading it into your skip.

Plastic

Whilst many plastics can be disposed of via skip, certain items may not be accepted if they are considered to be hazardous or if they fall into the e-waste category. However, this will be discussed later on.

Building rubble

Building sites can generate a wide variety of different materials and luckily, most of these will be accepted by skip hire companies. Whether you need to dispose of bricks, wood, concrete or metal, your skip will be there to bear the load.

Garden waste

If you’re tackling a mammoth home clean up job, why not take on the garden as well? Most skips will be able to accommodate garden waste including grass, old decking planks, twigs, branches, leaves and much more.

There are many materials that are widely accepted by skip hire businesses and with this in mind, the items that can be tossed in are countless. From furniture and fittings to garden waste and general household rubbish, there’s so much that can be disposed of using a skip. So, the real question is, what items are not skip-friendly?

Waste removal: what a skip hire company cannot accept

Whilst the products that are accepted and rejected may vary slightly between local skip hire companies, most businesses will not be able to process any of the following items:

-      Hazardous waste: this term covers a wide range of items including asbestos, tyres, televisions, computer monitors, fridges and freezers, batteries, gas cylinders and more.

-      E-waste: electrical appliances are not permitted to be put in a skip as these are covered under the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directive and must therefore be taken to a registered site to be disposed of safely.

-      Medical waste: from medicines and dressings to syringes and needles, all forms of medical waste are not suitable for skip disposal. These items are potentially dangerous and must be disposed of separately.

The above-mentioned items are just some of the materials that can (and can’t) be dumped into a skip. However, for a more comprehensive break down, it’s important to liaise with your skip hire company at length so that there are no grey areas.

The benefits of working with a skip hire company

As previously mentioned, skip hire is a convenient service that allows you to dispose of more or less all of your rubbish at once- but what are the other benefits?

Eco-friendly

Most skip hire companies are committed to reducing our reliance on landfill sites and strive to dispose of waste in an eco-friendly way. At Graham Churchill Plant Ltd, we take an environmentally conscious approach to skip hire. We pride ourselves on our waste recycling efforts and we promise to recycle as much of your waste as possible. Further to this, anything that can’t be recycled will be transported to the appropriate facility.

Safe

A busy construction site will generate tons of waste on a daily basis and this can be dangerous if it’s not safely stored. However, with a skip, you can keep your job site clear to protect the health and safety of both you and your staff.

Cost-effective

Hiring a skip is extremely cost-effective. Not only is it a very reasonably priced service, but also, you will save money on fuel as you won’t be travelling back and forth from the rubbish tip.

Lots of choice

It goes without saying that if you’re renovating a home from top to bottom, you’ll need a bigger skip than if you were simply clearing out some household rubbish. Luckily, a reputable skip hiring business will loan out skips of all different sizes, giving you the option to pick the best skip for your operation.
